Prajnaparamita

The Mother of The Buddhas

The Female Form of Transandental Wisdom

This form of Prajnaparamita is based on a Javanese Princess. This image of her first appeared in East Java c. 1300.

Her hands are in the teaching mudra. To her left is a book , symbolizing wisdom, resting on a lotus, which symbolizes compassion, illustrating the inseperability of these essential qualities. Prajna means wisdom and paramita means teaching.

Her expression is one of the blissful peace of transandental wisdom. It is carved in Lavastone from Java, probably in the vicinity of Borobodur.
