Compassion, by Heidi Hornberger
Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion , Peace, and Generosity, is perhaps the most revered goddess in all of Asia. Sometimes described as the feminine aspect of the Buddha, she has emerged in modern times as the symbol of hope and transformation for both the East and West. Although Chinese in origin, she crosses all religious boundaries. Kuan Yin is known as The One Who Hears the Cries of the World. So great is her concern for humanity that she chose to retain human form after receiving enlightenment, rather than transcend.
Her compassion offers healing and deliverance from suffering to all who approach her with an open heart. This sculpture invites us to explore and develop in ourselves the nature of Kuan Yin; eyes of inner listening, a smile of loving kindness, and a posture of serenity. The small figure of the Buddha, which adorns her headdress, reminds us of their ancient connection, and the lotus of her necklace calls us toward our own spiritual flowering. Universally adored by all who encounter her, Kuan Yin is the living embodiment of loving compassion.

Joy, by Heidi Hornberger
I have tumbled into the mysteries of the dark abyss again. This time, instead of looking to the heavens for hope and inspiration, I rest in the ashes of a profound loss and wait. I feel as though a fire has burned a hole through my very core, leaving me empty inside. Finally, from the ashes that have long since turned to cold black stone, a seed sprouts and begins to grow. Delicate and fragile, it holds a distant memory of something I have lost and feared was dead. Its gift is the rebirth of joy in my life, returned to me at long last.
This sculpture was originally carved from a branch of tropical wood in Bali. My mentor, Oka, had handed me a mud covered log, its heartwood completely rotted away. Growing from the center was a young plant that had found fertile ground in the dark hole. For years the name and meaning of this sculpture eluded me. Finally, after surviving a life threatening illness, I discovered the story it held for me.
